The Importance of Standing During the Work Day

A sedentary lifestyle may be linked to numerous health issues, including diabetes and high blood pressure.  For these individuals, it may be necessary to increase the amount of time standing during the day; this may be helpful in easing potential back problems and improving posture and strength.  There are many ways to incorporate standing throughout the work day, such as portioning your lunch time to include walking.  Meetings that consist of walking instead of sitting around a table may be beneficial as well. Standing desks may be another option, which can help increase alertness and therefore increase productivity.  Another helpful habit to acquire is using the stairs instead of an elevator, in addition to parking your car further away from the building you are entering to promote walking.

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

Why Do I Have Heel Pain?

There are many different possible causes of heel pain. Heel pain may occur when constant weight is placed upon the heel. Pain is typically caused by repetitive stress, resulting in soreness and extreme discomfort. Other causes of heel pain may include wearing shoes with heels that are too low or from a worn pad in the heel area of the shoe. One common diagnosis for heel pain is plantar fasciitis, a condition which can be caused by overpronation. The plantar fascia is a band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. When a patient overpronates, this tissue can stretch and can become inflamed, resulting in intense pain in the arch and heel of the foot. The pain may subside as the day progresses and can feel the most intense first thing in the morning. Treatment may include cushioning and elevating the heel to alleviate pressure on the foot. If the pain is the result of overpronation, a shoe with good arch support and a firm heel may prevent the inflammation. Please consult a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis if the pain persists.

Causes of Heel Pain

Onycholysis and Toenails Falling Off

Onycholysis is a condition where the toenail separates from the nail bed. Eventually, the toenail itself may fall off. There are a number of reasons why this may happen, some more serious than others. Trauma to the toes, whether it be repetitive or massive, can both lead to onycholysis. A pedicurist can accidentally hit underneath the nail or you could stub your toe in just the right (or wrong) way to induce separation. Also, it’s important to note that someone with long nails has an increased risk of the toenail separating from the nail bed. Fungal infections of the nail can weaken the nail and cause it to fall off, as can some skin diseases like psoriasis.
